🎯 What are Prediction Markets?

Prediction markets are platforms where you can bet on the outcome of future events. Think of them as a way to "vote with your money" on what you think will happen.

How They Work

  • Markets ask yes/no questions about future events (e.g., "Will Bitcoin reach $150,000 by end of 2025?")
  • Prices reflect the collective belief about the probability of each outcome
  • Traders buy shares in YES or NO based on their predictions
  • Winners receive payouts when the market resolves

Why Use Prediction Markets?

  • πŸ’° Profit from accurate predictions - If you're right, you make money
  • πŸ“Š See what the crowd thinks - Prices aggregate information from all traders
  • 🎯 Test your knowledge - Put your expertise to the test
  • πŸ“ˆ Diversify your portfolio - Bet on various topics and events

πŸ’‘ How Betting Works

Understanding Shares

When you bet on a market, you're buying shares. Each share represents a portion of the market's outcome:

  • If you buy YES shares and the market resolves YES, each share pays out 1 ETH
  • If you buy NO shares and the market resolves NO, each share pays out 1 ETH
  • If you're wrong, your shares become worthless (you lose your investment)

Understanding Prices

Prices are shown as percentages (e.g., "YES 58%" means YES shares cost 0.58 ETH each):

  • Lower prices = Lower probability, but higher potential profit if you're right
  • Higher prices = Higher probability, but lower potential profit
  • Prices change as people trade, reflecting the market's collective opinion

Example Trade

You think Bitcoin will reach $150,000 by end of 2025. The YES price is currently 58% (0.58 ETH per share).

  • You buy 10 YES shares at 0.58 ETH each = 5.8 ETH total cost
  • If Bitcoin reaches $150,000: You receive 10 ETH (1 ETH per share) = 4.2 ETH profit
  • If Bitcoin doesn't reach $150,000: You lose your 5.8 ETH investment

Payouts

When a market resolves:

  • Winning shares pay out 1 ETH per share
  • Losing shares become worthless
  • Payouts are automatically credited to your account balance
  • A small profit fee (1%) is deducted from your winnings

πŸ† What Happens When You Win or Lose?

When You Win

  1. Market Resolves - The market creator or admin resolves the market with the actual outcome
  2. Automatic Payout - If you hold winning shares, you automatically receive 1 ETH per share
  3. Profit Fee - A 1% fee is deducted from your profit (not from your original investment)
  4. Balance Updated - Your account balance is updated immediately
  5. Portfolio Updated - Your portfolio shows the closed position and profit

Winning Example

You bought 10 YES shares at 0.50 ETH each (5 ETH total). Market resolves YES.

  • Gross payout: 10 ETH (1 ETH Γ— 10 shares)
  • Your cost: 5 ETH
  • Your profit: 5 ETH
  • Profit fee (1%): 0.05 ETH
  • Net payout: 9.95 ETH
  • Net profit: 4.95 ETH

When You Lose

  1. Market Resolves - The market resolves with the opposite outcome
  2. Shares Become Worthless - Your shares have no value
  3. Loss Recorded - Your portfolio shows the closed position with a loss
  4. No Payout - You don't receive any ETH back

Losing Example

You bought 10 YES shares at 0.50 ETH each (5 ETH total). Market resolves NO.

  • Your investment: 5 ETH
  • Payout: 0 ETH
  • Total loss: 5 ETH

Risk Management

  • ⚠️ Only bet what you can afford to lose
  • πŸ“Š Diversify - Don't put all your funds in one market
  • 🎯 Do your research - Understand what you're betting on
  • ⏰ Check market end dates - Make sure you understand when markets resolve
